Fort Kearny Vacation -- Fort Kearny and The Archway

Friday, we went to the outdoor activity of visiting Ft. Kearny in the morning.  The girls and I sat in the covered wagon before we visited the "fort" where the girls were able to climb up all 4 corners to look out.  They enjoyed yelling and waving at Papa and Grandma from the last 3 corners.  Papa and Grandma only climbed the first one.  After climbing all 4 corners the girls were ready for (a short) break sitting on the bench.  They weren't really interested in the outlines of where the buildings used to be, but they did think it was fun to sit on the posts.

As the day got warmer, we were ready for the a/c at The Archway.  They took our picture as we entered the Archway and we bought it on a "Wanted" poster.  Mena absolutely freaked out when we had to go up the escalator to enter the museum.  She'd been on them before with me although not recently.  She told us that she'd been on one with her step-mom and had fallen on it.  I got her on and she gripped my arms tightly all the way to the top.  When we got ready to go back down, Dad suggested we just go on the elevator.  I got down on Mena's level and talked about how being brave means doing things even when we're scared.  I told her I'd be right there with her like when we came up.  She agreed to try it and was so proud when she made it to the bottom safely.  She/we talked about it the rest of the night and for days afterwards!

Mena was willing to put on the headset and Maggie agreed after a slight hesitation.  I was pretty much on my own to walk through since they each chose a grandparent to hold hands with through the displays.  The last two pictures are when the girls could look out at the interstate traffic driving below The Archway.
